The Extron System 208 D is an eight input AV system switcher designed to integrate both digital and analog sources. It works with optional TouchLink® touchpanels and SCP Secondary Control Panels to provide enhanced display and room control, and features Extron ProDSP™ with an extensive array of easy-to-use, digital audio processing tools for audio system setup and fine-tuning. The System 208 D offers digital video switching with four HDCP-compliant HDMI inputs, as well as analog video switching with four universal inputs, including an Extron Universal MTP Twisted Pair input. It outputs HDMI twisted pair and analog MTP Twisted Pair signals to the included SYS/MLS D R receiver, providing a complete digital and analog video and audio switching system with integrated room control.
The System 208 D is ideal for environments requiring display, device, and room control, as well as integration of a mix of digital and analog video sources, including classrooms, training rooms, conference rooms, and small boardrooms.
Accepts Multiple Digital and Analog Signal Formats
The System 208 D features independent digital and analog video switching. The digital portion comprises four HDMI inputs which are HDCP compliant. Each HDMI input features automatic cable equalization, which compensates for signal loss when using long input cable assemblies. The System 208 D de-embeds two-channel audio signals from the HDMI input, allowing for audio DSP processing and signal routing to the outputs.
The analog portion includes three VGA universal inputs that accept all common video formats, from composite video to HDTV and high resolution RGB. A fourth, Extron Universal MTP Twisted Pair input accepts all of these signals from an MTP Series Twisted Pair Transmitter.
Digital and Analog Twisted Pair Outputs
The System 208 D includes a dual twisted pair output for the HDMI signals, and a single Universal MTP Twisted Pair output for the analog signals. These outputs enable transmission over economical and installation-friendly CAT 5-type cables to the included SYS/MLS D R Twisted Pair Receiver, which can be conveniently mounted at the display.
EDID Minder®
The System 208 D features Extron’s EDID Minder to automatically manage the EDID information between the display device and all the HDMI and VGA input sources. EDID Minder offers an automatic mode which captures and stores the EDID from the display, and then communicates this EDID to the input sources. Also available is a user assigned mode, which allows pre-stored EDID, based on a user selected resolution, to be manually assigned to the sources. By maintaining continuous EDID communication with all sources, EDID Minder ensures that all HDMI and VGA sources power up properly and maintain their video outputs whether or not they are actively connected to the display device through the switcher's outputs.
MTP Twisted Pair System Optimization
The System 208 D offers features designed to streamline installation and set-up of MTP Twisted Pair systems, including video level and peaking compensation for the MTP input of the switcher as well as the SYS/MLS D R. Skew compensation is provided by the System 208 D for both the MTP input and output, maintaining RGB color alignment. Additionally, with automatic signal format detection, the SYS/MLS D R receiver automatically detects the incoming video signal format, as well as any incoming audio or RS-232 control signal from the System 208 D. The incoming signals are then routed to the appropriate output connectors.
The SYS/MLS D R is powered by the System 208 D via the digital output over the dual twisted pair cables. These cables also carry the HDMI and RS-232 signals. Audio signals from the System 208 D are transmitted to the SYS/MLS D R over the MTP cable.
Enhanced Display and Room Control
Virtually any RS-232 or Ethernet controllable projector or display device can be controlled by the System 208 D. Extron creates and administers a wide selection of certified projector control drivers that enable the System 208 D to control basic projector functions such as power and input selection. In addition, a custom configuration mode is available to allow for user-defined IR or RS-232 commands. The System 208 D offers two methods of projector control: bidirectional RS-232 or IR. It can learn IR signals from remote controls, which enables the System 208 D to communicate with the display and devices such as DVD players. Downloadable IR drivers and IR learning capability make set-up and operation simple and customizable.
The System 208 D also offers room control capability, so room lighting, screen settings, and other device functions may be controlled through the switcher’s four internal relays. In addition, two digital I/O ports are provided, allowing for enhanced monitoring via sensors and switches, or streamlined automation of triggering events, or other functions. By providing display control, room control, and universal display compatibility, the System 208 D consolidates system control functions into one integrated solution.
Audio Switching and Integrated ProDSP
The System 208 D features seven-input stereo audio switching to accompany incoming video sources. A mic/line audio matrix mixer allows either of two available mic/line inputs to be mixed into any or all of the audio switcher outputs. Input gain and attenuation is provided for each input, and the System 208 D provides master volume control on the front panel as well as a separate control for mic volume.
The System 208 D also incorporates ProDSP, an Extron-developed audio platform based on a powerful 32/64-bit floating point DSP engine, offering easy-to-use tools to control level, dynamics, filters, delay, ducking, loudness, and feedback suppression. ProDSP is managed by the intuitive DSP Configurator™ Software, which features a Graphical User Environment that offers a clear view of all input and outputs, audio processing blocks, audio switcher settings, and microphone mix points in a single window.
The System 208 D is available with three audio output variations, including the standard System 208 D with variable preamp outputs, the System 208 D SA with a stereo integrated amplifier and 25 watts rms output per channel into 4 or 8 ohms, and the System 208 D MA with a mono integrated 70 volt amplifier and 50 watts rms output.
Extensive Control Options
The switcher can be controlled using the front panel backlit buttons, IP Link® Ethernet Control, or RS-232 serial control. The front panel includes buttons for display functions such as power, mute, video modes, and room controls — such as lowering or raising a display screen, or powering lights on or off. Optional TouchLink touchpanels and SCP 104 and SCP 226 Secondary Control Panels duplicate the System 208 D’s front panel functions and enable users to remotely control the switching, projector, and room functions of the switcher. The SCP 104 AAP and SCP 226 AAP models can be used in conjunction with IRCM Control Modules for IR control of devices via the System 208 D.
