The SMD 101 is a compact, high performance H.264 decoder used with Extron encoders to provide complete end-to-end AV streaming systems. It decodes live streams from H.264 encoders and plays back AV media files available from network shares. It is compatible with streaming resolutions and refresh rates up to 1080p/60. Advanced signal processing, scaling, and aspect ratio management supply high quality signals to AV displays. The SMD 101 offers integration-friendly control features such as IR remote, wired IR, RS‑232, or Ethernet and an easy-to-navigate Web interface, which provide flexible control and management options. This compact, energy-efficient decoder is an ideal for use in overflow, monitoring, multi-channel streaming systems, high resolution signage, and messaging applications.

Advanced Video Processing

The SMD 101 includes video processing features that provide superior quality and simplify AV integration. It can scale its output to a wide range of display frequencies and output resolutions from 640x480 to 1920x1200 providing consistent, reliable image quality on many different types of displays. The output rate and resolution can be set to a defined resolution or automatically selected based on EDID communication with the connected display. Aspect ratio management includes a FILL mode, which provides full screen output, a FOLLOW mode, which preserves the image’s original aspect ratio, or FIT, which zooms into the image and provides full screen output without distorting the image’s geometry. These video processing features deliver superior streaming quality for AV systems.

Simplified Streaming Integration and Operation

The SMD 101 is compatible with the full range of streaming transport protocols available from Extron’s H.264 SMP Streaming Media Processors and SME Streaming Media Encoders, making it applicable to many unicast and multicast streaming configurations. It automatically negotiates use of the correct streaming transport protocol with the SMP and SME, simplifying system programming and operation. The SMD 101 decoder includes an embedded Web interface with an easy-to-navigate menu that simplifies configuration and deployment. Decoder status reporting and on-screen messaging make channel selection, configuration, and troubleshooting straightforward and uncomplicated. Additionally, IR remote, wired IR, RS-232, and Ethernet control options provide a range of methods to integrate SMD 101 into AV systems.

The SME 211 can generate custom keys that can be installed on an SMD, limiting access to secure streams the SMD has been configured to receive.

AV media file playback from network shares — Use as a playback device for on-demand playback of network-accessible media files.

Compatible with MP4 and MPEG-2 Transport Stream container formats — Playback common H.264 media player formats from accessible network drives.

Selectable audio output format: HDMI-embedded stereo audio or analog stereo audio — Flexible, cost effective use of display speakers or existing audio systems.

Supports file playback from SMP series — An SMP can be mounted as a network share to support sharing internal recordings to SMD products for direct content playback and review.

Integrated scaler offers selectable output resolutions from 640x480 to 1920x1200 — Wide range of output resolutions ensure that consistent, reliable image quality is presented on many different types of displays.

Decode at native resolution — The output rate and resolution can be configured to automatically follow the native format of the decoded video stream.

EDID defined scaling — The output rate and resolution can be configured for automatic selection based on EDID communication with the connected display.

Ethernet to RS-232 pass through control — Integration friendly Ethernet to RS-232 pass through for display control.

Fill/Follow/Fit Aspect Ratio Management — Decoded video can fill a display, maintain aspect ratio, or maintain uniformity, presenting imagery that meets customer expectations.

Control from IR remote, wired IR, RS-232, Ethernet, or embedded Web interface — Select from a range of control options to manage the SMD 101 for stand-alone operation or as part of an AV system.

Compatible with the full range of SMP and SME streaming transport protocols — Providing the flexibility to apply the most appropriate protocol based on various streaming system requirements and network conditions.

Compatible with unicast and multicast push, or unicast pull streaming applications — Support for push and pull streaming makes the SMD 101 compatible with different network topologies and streaming system configurations.

Toolbelt integration with Toolbelt 2.7.0 — Manage SMD information, firmware, and users with Toolbelt 2.7.0.

802.1X Authentication — SMD products support 802.1X authentication. Please review the 802.1X Technical Application Note in the Technical Documentation section.

Network Share support for SMB 2/3 — Support for SMB versions 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, and 3.02. The active SMB version can be controlled using the Options field in the Network Share dialog. Note: Encrypted communication is not supported.

Automated CEC display control — Support limited automated CEC display control (power on, power off, and input select). CEC display control is disabled by default.

HDMI volume control — The volume of the digital audio embedded on the HDMI output now tracks with the analog audio level. This allows control of the audio level from the display using the SMD IR remote or any existing audio level control method.

Internal memory for media files and still image files — 150 MB of memory is available to store still image files or motion video files.

Upload and display image files — Upload PNG, JPG, TIFF, or BMP image files at resolutions up to 1920x1080 to present familiar imagery or organizational branding, either on demand or in times of network or streaming disruption.

On-screen messaging — On-screen presentation of operating status or channel selection aids in channel selection, system configuration, and troubleshooting.

HDMI output — Compatible with HDMI and DVI digital displays.

Automatic negotiation of streaming transport protocols with SMP and SME — Makes configuration and operation of Extron H.264 streaming products easy in various streaming and network configurations.

Easy-to-use embedded Web interface — Embedded Web interface makes configuration and deployment a simple activity.

Playback controls including progress bar — Playback controls present a visual indication of Time and Pause status, allowing for efficient control of content.

Compatible with many third party H.264 encoders — Decode 720p/60 and 1080p/60 streaming video from Extron’s SMP, SME, or other compatible H.264 encoders.
